Ranjit Singh's tomb from the top of Ranjit Singh's palace - Lahore c1860's - 1870's
This Albumen image was taken from Ranjit Singh’s palace in Lahore, Pakistan. It focuses on his tomb, and manages to capture a number of carts positioned in the courtyard. This gives a sense of activity rarely seen in early photographs. The fuzziness surrounding the carts would have been caused by people or livestock moving around the well.
Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) was a Sikh chief who was known as the Lion of the Punjab. He united the Sikh provinces and became the most powerful ruler in India. He was an important ally of the British.
Marble pavilion and old entrance to the fort - Lahore 1860-70's
Ranjit Singh built the marble pavilion in the tree-lined terraces of the Hazuri Bagh in Lahore in 1818. It was to provide a cool garden retreat where he could take refuge from the heat. The European gentleman in the pavilion is likely to be James Craddock, who often included himself in his photographs.
Photographed by Craddock, James in ca. 1860 - 1870

From Wikipedia : March 6, 1908 and by 1921 there were 15 km of track and 24 cars. The system closed ca. 1963.

The Khyber Pass, extending for 33 miles (53 kms), is the most northerly and important of the passes between Afghanistan and Pakistan, connecting Kabul and Peshawar. It runs through the arid and broken mountains which form the last spurs of the Safed Koh range of the Hindu Kush. Three miles beyond Jamrud is the entrance to the Pass from the opening called Shadi Bagiar. The Peshawar Valley Field Force entered the Pass traversing Shadi Bagiar.
