'Writers' Building (Bengali: 'Mahakaran) is the secretariat of the West Bengal State Government and is located in the capital city of Kolkata. It originally served as the office for Company writers, hence the name. Designed by Thomas Lyon in 1780, it received its impressive Corinthian facade, an example of Neo-Renaissance, in 1889. There is a statue of Britannia atop the main entrance .
